As Deakin’s second-largest campus, Geelong Waurn Ponds is known for its sprawling landscape and state-of-the-art facilities, including the Centre for Advanced Design in Engineering Training, the Carbon Nexus premier research lab and Deakin Medical School. And if being active is your thing, it also boasts a fitness centre and a brand-new Elite Regional Sports Precinct. Just 10 kms from Geelong CBD and close to Torquay and the surf coast, the campus has extensive accommodation and has easy access to the Waurn Ponds train station.

HIGHLIGHTS

High Voltage Lab

The high voltage lab is a key facility housed within CADET, dazzling visitors with tangible lightning bolts. It enables both students and industry to utilise the equipment to perform high voltage electrical testing. The Tesla coils are capable of producing voltages approaching 1000k.

  1. Civil engineering laboratory

    Building kc, Room kc1.101, Civil engineering lab

    Come and see civil equipment and facilities. Talk to our staff about civil engineering and what it involves. Geomechanics (soil) and hydraulics/hydrology (water) labs open for viewing.

  2. Crime scene house

    Departing from the Careers and Course Information Centre

    Provides students with a real-life crime scene, staged with gruesome elements forensic investigators are confronted with, including body fluids and blood, fingerprints, fibres and weapons. All day, every half hour.

  3. Engineering laboratories

    CADET Building, Building ke

    Engineering activities and displays – witness the power in the high voltage lab and immerse yourself in a virtual world while experiencing all that 21st century engineering education has to offer. Our brand new CADET facility showcases the following labs: virtual reality, high voltage, product prototype and product realisation, material, electrical engineering, renewable energy, mechatronics, physics. Civil to be held in Building kc, Room kc1.101.

    Building ka, ka3.103 foyer

    See creative paintings by maggots – learn how maggots are being used to research the relationship between blowflies, maggots and bacteria, while watching them create cool artwork.

  8. Mechatronics lab

    CADET Building, Building ke, Room ke2.210

    Come and see the next generation in mechatronics engineering and challenge Baxter the Robot to a game of Connect 4. Mechatronics engineering teaching staff will be available to discuss careers, as sometimes Baxter speaks too quickly.

    Take a tour through the science laboratories to see the sophisticated equipment used in teaching and research. Talk with current students and technical staff, and also perform some fundamental chemistry experiments. Meet at Room ka3.103 for tours on the half hour.

    Tour Deakin's cutting-edge virtual reality lab every half hour. Come and experience the latest in virtual reality research and see what it's like to step inside a virtual reality room and disassemble a virtual robot, or see how a normal smart phone can take you to a different place and time. Or you may just want to chat to the VR team about how VR is changing the way we do things.

GETTING TO GEELONG WAURN PONDS CAMPUS

If you are coming from Melbourne allow just over an hour by car. Need some help with directions? Campus Compass can get you there.

V/Line trains run every seventy minutes from Southern Cross railway station from 7.50 am. Once you arrive at Geelong railway station, hop on the free and accessible Deakin Open Day shuttle bus to make your way to the Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus.

V/Line trains or coaches run from many regional centres, including Ballarat, Warrnambool and the Great Ocean Road.

  1. Why do I need to go to Open Day?

    Well, choosing a university can sometimes be tricky but Deakin Open Day gives you a glimpse into what it’s like to be a student. Plus, there’s heaps of fun stuff, free entertainment and great food between the information sessions.

  2. How do I get the most out of Open Day?

    Talk to us! Our staff and students are able to advise you on courses, how to apply, what extra entry requirements you might need. We'll also give you lowdown on university life while you roam around and get a feel for the campus.

  3. How do I find the right people to speak to?

    Don't worry, they're easy to find. The General Information Stand, and the Career and Course Information Centre, are your first stops. That’s where you’ll find all the information you need on courses, including postgraduate studies. If you need an Auslan interpreter this is also the place to ask.

  4. What questions should I ask?

    Think about what you’re interested in and if you want to study full time, part time, on campus or online. Then ask us how that translates into a course, what the entry requirements are or how it can lead to a career. If you need some help thinking about your options, then you can kickstart your course and career exploration with our new Explore App.
